Coughs
About Coughs
Coughs are one of the most common reasons for seeing a GP. They’re a natural reflex that clears the airways of mucus, irritants, and microbes. Most coughs are caused by viral infections such as colds and flu and settle within two weeks. Less commonly, they may be due to bacterial chest infections or pneumonia. Other triggers include asthma or COPD flare-ups, allergies, smoking, and acid reflux.
Types of Cough:
Dry (tickly) cough: Felt as a throat tickle, caused by inflammation of the throat and upper airways. It produces no phlegm and is often triggered by colds, flu, smoke, or other irritants.
Chesty (mucus) cough: Caused by excess mucus in the lungs, often due to colds or flu. The cough helps clear the airways and fight infection.
How Can Salt Therapy Help
Unlike medication that only suppresses symptoms, salt therapy targets the root causes of breathing problems. Salt has natural properties that support the respiratory system:
Antibacterial – dries out and destroys harmful germs.
Anti-inflammatory – reduces swelling in the airways.
Mucolytic – loosens excess mucus and speeds up toxin removal.
Cleansing – helps clear pollen and other airborne irritants.
Immune boosting – strengthens defenses, restores energy, and lowers IgE levels to reduce overactive immune responses.
By easing inflammation, clearing mucus, and fighting infection, salt therapy improves lung function and breathing quality. This increased oxygen availability supports overall health, helping to balance the body, improve sleep, reduce reliance on medication, and build resilience against everyday infections.
How Often Should You Come
For lasting results, a course of 10–15 sessions is recommended, ideally 2–3 times per week. After completing a course, most people experience clear airways and relief from symptoms, with effectiveness reported at 75–98%. Many clients return once or twice a year for maintenance, with occasional top-up sessions if they feel run down or are coming down with a cold.
