What Is Salt Therapy (Halotherapy)?

Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, is a natural, non-invasive wellness experience inspired by the microclimate of Eastern Europe’s salt caves.
During each 45-minute session, fine particles of pharmaceutical-grade salt are gently dispersed into the air by a halogenerator. As you breathe in this purified, salt-rich air, the particles travel deep into your airways and settle on your skin — helping to cleanse, calm, and restore balance naturally.

Origins & History

The practice of salt therapy originates from speleotherapy—the therapeutic use of underground salt caves and mines.
In the 19th century, doctors observed that salt miners had notably healthy lungs and fewer respiratory problems than other workers. These findings inspired purpose-built salt chambers designed to recreate the clean, mineral-enriched air found in natural salt caves.

Today, halotherapy uses a controlled halogenerator system to reproduce that environment, allowing you to experience this age-old tradition in a calm, modern setting.

How Salt Therapy Works

A halogenerator grinds pure sodium chloride (NaCl) into microscopic particles and releases them into the air.
These particles can reach deep into the respiratory tract and gently interact with the skin’s surface.

For the Respiratory System

  • May help loosen and clear mucus

  • Supports easier breathing and airway comfort

  • Helps remove airborne irritants and allergens

  • Encourages deeper relaxation and lung function

  • May benefit athletes’ respiratory performance and recovery

When combined with complementary therapies such as oxygen therapy or red light therapy, salt therapy can enhance overall respiratory wellness and performance.

    For the Skin

  • May soothe redness or irritation

  • Supports the skin’s natural cleansing process

  • Leaves the skin feeling refreshed, hydrated and renewed

The salt environment is naturally sterile and dry, creating a tranquil space for restoration and relaxation.

The Science Behind Halotherapy

A growing number of studies explore how salt aerosol therapy may support respiratory and skin wellness. While research is still emerging, many findings are promising:

  • Halotherapy – An Ancient Natural Ally in the Management of Asthma (2021) showed improved mucociliary clearance and respiratory comfort when used alongside standard care.

  • Inhalation of Sodium Chloride Aerosol Particles in a Controlled Environment (2021) found that salt aerosols improved mucus clearance and reduced airway inflammation.

  • A 2022 review of 13 studies reported that halotherapy “may have a positive effect on chronic respiratory diseases, improving mucociliary elimination and lung function,” though more research is needed.

What to Expect During a Session

Each salt therapy session lasts 45 minutes. You’ll simply sit back, breathe normally and relax as you enjoy the calm, salt-infused atmosphere. Soft lighting, soothing music and a comfortable environment help you unwind both physically and mentally.

Children are welcome in our dedicated child sessions and must be accompanied by an adult.

Some people experience light coughing or nasal clearing during or after their session — a normal part of the process as airways begin to clear.
